How much soil will level your lawn?

How to take the readings.

The figures do not need to be heights above sea level. They only need to come from the same horizontal reference.

    Set a level reference

    Stretch a tight string between level pegs or use a rotating laser. Keep the reference above the highest point.

  2. 02

    Find both extremes

    Measure from the reference down to the lowest and highest ground. A lower patch normally gives the larger reading.

    Judge the whole surface

    Choose slight, typical or very uneven based on how much of the lawn needs filling—not just the single deepest dip.

An estimate, not a ground survey.

The model treats the lawn as an irregular surface between your two readings. It uses 25%, 40% or 55% of the full height difference as the average fill depth, depending on the unevenness choice.

  • Central weight uses 1,500 kg per cubic metre for screened topsoil.
  • The order figure includes 10% for settlement, spillage and small measuring errors.
  • High spots cut down and reused on site can reduce the amount you need to buy.
  • Deep hollows, active settlement or drainage failure need investigation before adding soil.
